Nugenix Ultimate is a natural testosterone booster that claims to increase free testosterone levels, boost muscle mass, and enhance libido. The supplement contains a blend of natural ingredients that are supposed to work together to achieve these benefits.
Overall, Nugenix Ultimate contains a mix of ingredients that are reasonably well-backed by scientific studies to boost testosterone levels, improve libido and energy levels. However, the dosages for some ingredients may be lower than the effective range, while others are mainly symptom mitigation ingredients. So, yes, but not nearly as well as other testosterone boosters in it's price range.
D-Aspartic Acid
D-Aspartic Acid is an amino acid that has been shown to boost testosterone levels in men with low testosterone. However, it doesn't appear to have the same effect on men with normal testosterone levels. 3000mg is at the top end of the effective range, so we're off to a good start with Nugenix ultimate. It's also been shown to increase lean muscle mass gains regardless of it's effect on testosterone, making it good for a muscle focused test booster. [1,4]
Fenugreek
Fenugreek is an herb that is commonly used in testosterone boosters. It may help increase testosterone levels by limiting the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, which converts testosterone to DHT. However, this may not be the best approach, as DHT is also an important hormone for male health. Fenugreek extract has been shown to be effective at delivering a moderate increase in testosterone levels in both healthy and unhealthy men. 700mg is within the effective range for fenugreek, although with it only being 50% saponins, it's the bottom end of the effective range. [2,5]
Epimedium Extract
Epimedium extract, also known as Horny Goat Weed, is a Chinese herb that is known to boost libido and sexual function. It may also have some testosterone-boosting properties, although human studies are limited. This is a bit more of a heresay ingredient, and not really one that has any impact on testosterone. Nugenix Ultimate is aiming to be an all rounder, but we'd have rather seen more longjack as this is more effective and as we'll come to in a minute it's a little low dosed. [6]
Stinging Nettle Root
Stinging nettle root may have anti-inflammatory properties and improve prostate health. However, its effects on testosterone levels are not well-supported by scientific research with there being limited human trials, they are generally positive, but this is usually used as a bulking ingredient if there's a bit of capsule space left over. [7]
Maca Extract
Maca extract is a popular ingredient in supplements designed to boost libido and sexual function. It may also have adaptogenic properties, helping your body cope with stress and improve energy levels. Maca is great for libido, not so good for boosting test levels, 200mg is within the effective dosage range, so it's fine if you're looking for relief from low testosterone symptoms rather than a boost itself. [8]
LongJack
LongJack, often referred to as tongkat ali is another ingredient that is commonly used in testosterone boosters. It may help boost libido and improve male fertility, although its direct effects on testosterone levels are unclear. That said, the studies generally seem to suggest it has an effect. It's an "OK" ingredient for a test booster, the main issue is simply that 125mg is at the bottom end of the effective range and ginseng would've been a better inclusion. [9]
Mucuna Pruriens Extract
Mucuna pruriens extract is a powerful ingredient that has been shown to increase dopamine levels in the brain. This can help improve motivation and focus, making it a popular ingredient in supplements for athletes and bodybuilders when cutting, but it doesn't really do much if anything to effect testosterone levels so it's not a great inclusion for nugenix ultimate. And to top it off the dosage is well below the effective range. [10]
Boron
Boron is a trace mineral that has been shown to increase testosterone levels at certain doses. The 10mg of boron in Nugenix Ultimate is consistent with the amounts used in scientific studies so this is all good. [11]
Anything Missing?
Nugenix Ultimate is missing several essential minerals and vitamins that are known to boost testosterone levels. These include vitamin D, magnesium, and zinc. Piperine and I3C are also missing, which can aid the absorption of other ingredients and inhibit estrogen activity, respectively. Panax Ginseng is also generally considered to be far more effective than longjack, as is ashwagandha. [12,13,14,15]
